Dr Roka was born in Balewa, Baglung district of Nepal in 26 September. He was the fourth child of Captain Padam Bahadur Roka (Indian Army) and Mrs Min Kumari Roka. Roka senior had a vision of educating his children and hence took junior Roka to India at the age of 4 years. From Madras to Kalimpong to Belgaum he studied in India’s best Boy boarding schools and passed his +12 in 1989 with 84% and 98 in Biology. He was also the All India Topper in the combined UPSC, National Defence Academy (NDA) exam in 1989 but left the course as he was unable to join air force.
After briefly studying BSc. Hons Zoology in Delhi University where too he was the 5th University topper, he then joined MBBS at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) which he passed with honors in 1997 and completed Master in Surgery in 2000.In spite of his good academic record, Job options and career in India he decided to come back to Nepal. He joined BP Koirala Institute of Health sciences, Dharan as a faculty in year 2000. It was there that he noticed the lack of neurosurgery, brain trauma related deaths and the Financial and Psychological Consequences herewith, in the whole eastern Nepal which made him decide to further study the subject and he joined National Academy of Medical Sciences, Kathmandu in 2004 under Dr Devkota. During the study period completed his 2-year fellowship in Skull base surgery from Singapore to be the First M.Ch.Neurosurgery from NAMS.
Presently based in Biratnagar for the past 15 years he has done more than 7500 neurosurgery and 15000 total surgeries to save thousands of lives. He has also conducted multiple free health camps in all over eastern Nepal, Janakpur to Taplejung. He has appeared in various healths related programs in Radio, Newspapers and TV propagating Neurosurgery in East Nepal. Under his guidance he has completed four three UK research trial and one USA ICU trial.
He also has published more than 100 articles in various national and international journals. Dr Roka has presented various research papers in multiple international conferences and travelled to over 30 countries. He is also the recipient of various National awards and International awards for his contribution to Neurosurgery in eastern Nepal including Suprabal Jana Sevasri from President of Nepal, Nepal Bidhyabhusan K from President of Nepal, Icons of Healthcare (Singapore), Zilinskas Award, Indo-Nepal Shiromani award, Dahala International award etc.
Presently he is the President of Nepalese Society of Neurosurgeons, Ex chairman of Neurovascular chapter, Nepalese society of Neurosurgeons, past Senior Vice President of Koshi Nepal Medical Association, past Editor in chief of Nepal journal of Neuroscience and Member of American neurosurgeon association, Congress of neurosurgeons, Indian Neuro society, world stroke organization, epilepsy society and trauma associations etc.
His wife, Dr Narayani Roka is Consultant Ophthalmologist and he has 2 sons, Suyam Roka aged 18 and Safin Roka, 17 years. His younger brother is a graduate from Yale University and is Professor in Wisconsin, USA. Apart from these he writes poems and has done Paragliding, PADI certified Scuba diver, Canoeing, Rock climbing, Trekking, Sky diving and white water Rafting.
He has completed 12 volumes of 108 Poems, with 12 published and also a fiction Novel. In future he plans to expand the neurosurgery to the masses and educate the population regarding head injuries.
