Mode of Action

Clotrimazole exerts its action primarily by damaging the permeability barrier in the fungal cytoplasmic membrane. Clotrimazole thereby inhibits the biosynthesis of ergosterol in a concentration-dependent manner by inhibiting the demethylation of 14 alpha lanosterol.
